Tokens on the stock market

Each instruction describes very precisely how tokens move on the stock market. Usually, when we sell shares, the tokens goes down, when we pay dividends, it goes up, etc … But one thing was not described by any instruction so far, what to do, to remember that we already moved given token! This is something you have to look somewhere, see how others play, or learn it yourself.

When we started getting to know 18xx, in every game someone was asking: have you already moved this token? Or maybe you didn’t? Then the person who operated a given company started to wonder, did they move or not? We quickly figured out a way to use additional tokens, to put them in a row in which companies were supposed to operate in a given OR, and when someone moved a given company, they immediately moved that additional token in that row. But we had to have additional tokens for each game and each company! When I was making a print-n-play game, I could make such additional tokens and that was not a problem. This system was not perfect either, because some people moved a token in the stock market, but forgot to move it in the row. And maybe we would continue to play like that until today, if not for our blog.

Someone asked (JCL I think) what kind of row line is next to the board? I wrote back what and how, and I got a short answer: why don’t you turn the tokens over after you move them on the exchange? Well, why didn’t we do that? Because when I was making the first PnP game, I followed the example of 1830, where the tokens were the same on both sides! So for my games I made the same markers, double-sided, same on all sides!

It took us a while to change our habits (and unstick the stickers on the other side) and now we play like professionals čśë

So: after moving on the stock exchange, always turn the marker over (provided that it is different on the other side – e.g. wooden are without a sticker, or in a different color, or with a cross). This way you will see which company has already made the move and if the token has been moved (because it will be lying on the side without the sticker). Simple solution! At the end of the operational round, you can turn all the tokens over, or not if each company has a unique color, or a crossed logo. Thanks to the token color or crossed logo, you can see which company is supposed to operate now and in the next round, after the company’s move, flip it back to the side with the sticker.

The mechanism is very simple, but probably not described anywhere. I wonder if you learned the rules of 18xx, did you come up with any other way to watch this element in the game?

Gdy zaczynali┼Ťmy poznawa─ç 18xx, to chyba w ka┼╝dej grze pada┼éo pytanie: poruszy┼ée┼Ť ju┼╝ t─ů firm─Ö?

Bo robi─ůc pierwsze PnP, wzorowa┼éem si─Ö na 1830, gdzie znaczniki by┼éy takie same z obu stron! Wi─Öc do moich gier zrobi┼éem takie same znaczniki, dwustronne, takie same z ka┼╝dej strony!

Chwil─Ö nam zaj─Ö┼éo zmienienie przyzwyczaje┼ä (i odlepienie nalepek z drugiej strony) i teraz gramy ju┼╝ jak zawodowcy čśë

  1. The Mayfair version of 1830 has square tokens that are the same on both sides. We’d rotate them 45 degrees after a company had operated. Not an ideal solution, but it worked.
I’ve since replaced them with RailsOnBoards tokens!

  2. The 2018 Lookout/Mayfair version of 1830 has arrows on the backside of the stock market tokens that are flipped over and used to indicate which direction the token was moved.
