18LA my impressions

Francesc Sistach has already written about this game. You can read the full article here: https://www.railsonboards.com/2020/11/11/18-los-angeles-first-impressions/

Now I will just write about my impressions after two online games. There is one thing about this game that I don’t like very much and I’d love to change it right away, but it’s impossible on 18xx.games. Lest it be that I am complaining, I really like one novelty brought by the 18LA. I also disagree with Galatolol who says that in 1846 and probably also in 18LA there is one winning strategy, but I will back to it later.

The game draws most of the rules from 1846, makes a few adjustments of its own, which, as always, give us a breath of fresh air and the feeling that we are playing something completely new.

One of the new rules is the way the priority card circulates. I will focus on this element for a longer, because in my opinion it is the most debatable. This mechanism works so that at the BEGINNING of a stock round, the player with the least amount of cash is first, then the second most cash, and so on. The result is that if we wanted to influence this order somehow, we would have to withhold dividend payments in operational round. So we would be harming ourselves. Because paying dividends, especially in the early stages of the game, is the most important thing. Second: trying to calculate whether I will have less cash than others if I withhold my payment is a daunting task. It is very difficult to control it and calculate it in any way. In our games, nobody paid the least attention to priority. At first I thought it was a ridiculous idea that if I had my own physical copy of the game, we would never play this way. But maybe that is what the author meant? It’s about not focusing on the order and better controlling those players who start leading at some point. Because they will be the last to play in the stock round, and thus they will not buy any stock of the company that brings the highest income. You could say that this is holding the snowball back and defending this mechanism in such a way makes the most sense and this concept appeals to me the most.

The funny thing is that while writing this text, I saw an element that did not suit me at first and which I thought was strange.

The second element that I liked very much in 18LA is the two types of trains that enter at the same time in different phases of the game. Trains with one number in the name (2,4,5,6) are passenger trains, trains with two numbers (3/5,4/6,7/8) are freight trains. Now, note: Passenger trains can use the same tracks as freight trains! So if we have one short, but very profitable route, then having both types of trains in one company at the same time, we can get the income from it twice! This was what I had in our last game and my income was the highest for a long time, but it made me the last one in the stock round.

During our game, Janek stated that 1846 and 18LA are the easiest to win by using a high stock strategy. This is a subject to be checked, but it seems to me that I have come across a description many times that 1846 is exceptionally balanced in this respect. That there are many ways to victory and if there was one winning strategy, it would have been loud about it a long time ago. Perhaps this is a good strategy to win if other players don’t take the same path to victory, but if all but one decide to open their business high, maybe the one player who opened low will have an advantage? I would like to check it once, but maybe you already know the answer?

As you can probably guess, Janek used this strategy in our game. I joined him at some point and I bought 40% of his company shares, Janek had only 50%, so I was one step behind him all the time and only the last two rounds made him win. In fact, in our case, the shares we had in the companies of other players were decisive. We bought them mid-game when it was hard to predict which trains each company would have later. Janek accurately bet on companies that eventually had two trains at the end of the game and he had more shares in them.

I liked this title so much that when my lady said she had no gift idea, I asked for a copy from Brennan Sheremeto, which you can find on Etsy. It will not be a title that will make it to my strict top of 18xx games, but it intrigued me and I will be happy to come back to it.

… and today Marcin from Olkusz (after month from our online game) wrote me: I like this game a lot, small tight map, a lot of blocking, and 1846 rules. For beginners better then 1846.

18LA moje wrażenia

Francesc Sistach pisał już o the grze.

Pociągi z jednym numerkiem w nazwie (2,4,5,6) to pociągi pasażerskie, pociągi z dwiema cyframi (3/5,4/6,7/8) to pociągi towarowe.

  1. I don’t say that is the “winning strategy”, but the “default strategy”. I’m also not sure yet whether this applies to 18 Los Angeles.
