1817 again and again

Recently, I have played for the seventh time 1817, but I still have the impression that I don’t know anything about this title yet. This game has an incredible amount of possibilities. Lately when I was driving a car or walking with my dog, I was thinking about a strategy for the next game. In other titles, I right away could see where I made a mistake, what I screwed up and what to do better next time. 1817 is incredibly mysterious in this regard.

I know I could read a tutorial or watch a guide, and the next time I might rock the game, and I would definitely know a lot more. However, I like to explore the game myself, piece by piece. It was so with 1830 and it will be the same way with 1817.
During last play I managed to implement my game plan. I will tell you that I wanted two 2-share companies, transform it into one 5-share and then into 10-share company, raise its price, borrow it so that it would be a tasty piece for other players, so that other players would buy options for its shares, only so that I could sell my shares in it and after some time I could buy them back dirt cheap. The plan worked, but at one point, when I saw how many options everyone bought and how much the price was going to drop, I was very eager to try to defend it. Because it’s my company! It was only when I realized that the companies we operate were just a pawn in the game that had to be properly used, that made me stop and I came back to the plan that was in my head.

We all found out that we needed to play 1817 more often to get to know it better. I know a lot of other titles are waiting in the line, but 1817 is the most intriguing, the most enticing. Especially when it is played in an experienced group that plays smoothly, because only then the game does not last several hours.

Our playing time was like this:

  • 1st game: 4 hours 45 minutes (halted)
  • 2nd game: 2 hours 25 minutes (bankruptcy)
  • 3rd game: 11 hours 47 minutes
  • 4th game: 13 hours 15 minutes (it is the longest playing time ever!)
  • 5th game: 4 hours 12 minutes (bankruptcy – I know it doesn’t finish the game, but our host has gone bankrupt)
  • 6th game: 7 hours 22 minutes
  • 7th game: 6 hours 15 minutes

Yes, the last game was only 6 hours and 15 minutes long! After all, we play the same amount of time in 1822 or 1844. But this is only possible in an experienced group. If you are starting your adventure with 18xx, you got hooked, you know that you will be playing mainly in 18xx and you have a fairly stable group, invest in 1817 and wait. Play 100 other games, and only then give 1817 a chance when you’ve got the right pace.

Original text:

Bo przecież to moja firma!

Jeśli zaczynacie przygodę z 18xx, łyknęliście bakcyla, wiecie, że będziecie grać głównie w 18xx i macie w miarę stałą grupę, to zainwestujcie w 1817 i poczekajcie. Rozegrajcie 100 innych rozgrywek i dopiero wtedy, gdy nabierzecie odpowiedniego tempa gry, dajcie szansę 1817.

    1. We are not playing friendly, so Michał built a normal yellow city there. He was afraid that Janek would block him.

      1. I see. We’re the winners of the steel mill private and the winner of the starting company in Pittsburgh two different people?
