1841lite first impressions

Do you remember when I used to complain that we don’t have anyone to play with? Yes, it really was, and sometimes the third player was worth their weight in gold. There were also such meetings that there were only two of us, then instead of games, I took my wife and we had a nice meeting with a couple of friends. Therefore, when it turned out recently that there are as many as seven of us to play 18xx, I just asked if someone had taken a second set of poker chips. Because in this case, it’s best to divide into two groups. The first one sat to 18Scan, and me together with Janek (Galatolol), Michał from Olkusz and Adam, we sat down to 1841 Lite version! Now let me say it clearly and with full awareness: I love this game!

The lite version is even better then the full game and mechanically does not change much (only the Tuscan connection of companies is missing). As before companies can open new companies and the next ones can open new ones …etc. Companies can also buy shares of other companies. So it may suddenly turn out that our parent company may be taken over by one of the daughter companies of another player! It sounds like a horror movie and I’m even afraid to write about such contingencies. Fortunately, nothing like that happened in our game, but it is an option that one of us will try sooner or later. More over because it is a nasty opportunity (and we like such possibilities the most), and the number of shares we have in our parent company is often only a CEO certificate.

During one evening meeting, we played the lite version twice. The first time after two hours, it seemed that the game was almost over, either Michał from Olkusz or me would win. The difference would be small, we could play for another hour and find out who the winner is, or play all over again. Then in the second game it seemed to me that I figured out how the game worked, that I only need to start a second daughter company, and then another, and my victory is close.

But the second time I found out that it is not that simple, somewhere, at some point, I missed something and at the end of the game I was close to bankruptcy. I had to sell almost all the shares and only the CEO certificate was left for me, but other players did not have much better results, because at the very end Michał went bankrupt and he was eliminated from the game. Our guests from Krakow (Janek and Adam) stayed on the podium.

The game is really fantastic. It seems to me that the key to the whole mechanics is knowing the right moments so that you can buy the right permanent trains. Because otherwise you have to pay extra for the most expensive train from your own pocket (although during the first game I bought it without any problems for the company’s cash). So far, I do not know where I made a mistake in the second game, but there is one big difference between the winners and the losers: the winners had one company more in the chain of companies (parent company -> daughter -> next one). Perhaps it was crucial?

The most important little detail at the end. Our second full game took us 2 hours and 11 minutes !!! But we played in a fast group, because Krakow players are really fast and by the end of the game nobody was looking for a place to earn $10 more. Such analyzing of the routes would not change much, and as you can see, we have a record-breaking game in a really serious and honorable title. 1841Lite can be really fast despite the complicated rules and it’s just a shame the game is so hard to get.

1841lite pierwsze wrażenia
Pamiętacie jak kiedyś narzekałem, że nie mamy z kim grać? Naprawdę tak było i czasami trzeci gracz był na wagę złota. Były też takie spotkania, że była nas tylko dwójka, wtedy zamiast gier, zabierałem małżonkę i spotkanie graniowe było miłym spotkaniem z parą znajomych. Dlatego, gdy niedawno okazało się, że na graniu jest nas aż siódemka, to zdębiałem i spytałem tylko, czy ktoś zabrał ze sobą drugi komplet żetonów pokerowych. Bo w takim przypadku najlepiej się podzielić na dwie grupy. Pierwsza zasiadła do 18Scan, a ja razem z Jankiem (Galatolol), Michałem z Olkusza i Adamem zasiadłem do 1841 w wersji Lite! Powiem teraz jasno i z pełną świadomością: kocham tę grę!

W wersji lite jest ona jeszcze lepsza, a mechanicznie niewiele się zmienia (brak tylko toskańskiego połączenia firm). Dalej spółki mogą otwierać kolejne firmy i te kolejne mogą otwierać kolejne…. Firmy mogą także kupować akcje innych firm. Może się więc nagle okazać, że naszą firmę matkę, może przejąć jakaś ze spółek córek innego gracza! Toż to horror i nawet boję się o takich ewentualnościach pisać. Na szczęście w naszej grze nic takiego nie miało miejsca, ale jest to jakaś opcja, którą pewnie ktoś z nas prędzej czy później wypróbuje. Tym bardziej że to wredna możliwość (a takie możliwości lubimy najbardziej), a liczba akcji, jakie posiadamy w naszych firmach, to często zaledwie certyfikat prezesa.

W czasie jednego wieczornego spotkania zagraliśmy w wersję lite dwa razy. Za pierwszym razem po dwóch godzinach, wydawało się, że pojedynek jest prawie rozstrzygnięty, wygrałby albo Michał z Olkusza, albo ja. Różnica byłaby niewielka, mogliśmy grać jeszcze z godzinę i się przekonać, albo zagrać raz jeszcze od nowa. Wtedy wydawało mi się, że rozgryzłem tę grę, że trzeba tylko uruchomić drugą firmę córkę, a potem kolejną i zwycięstwo mam w kieszeni.

Ale za drugim razem przekonałem się, że to nie jest takie proste, gdzieś, w jakimś momencie, coś przegapiłem i pod koniec gry otarłem się o bankructwo. Musiałem sprzedać prawie wszystkie udziały i został mi tylko certyfikat prezesa, ale inni gracze nie mieli dużo lepszych wyników, bo Michał w samej końcówce zbankrutował i odpadł z gry, a na podium zostali nasi goście z Krakowa (Janek i Adam).
Gra jest naprawdę fantastyczna. Wydaje mi się, że kluczowe w całej mechanice jest wyczucie odpowiednich momentów, tak żeby kupić odpowiednie permanentne pociągi. Bo inaczej do najdroższego pociągu trzeba dopłacać z własnej kieszeni (chociaż przy pierwszej rozgrywce kupiłem go bez żadnych problemów z kasy firmy). Dotąd nie wiem gdzie zrobiłem w drugiej grze błąd, ale jest między wygrywającymi i przegranymi jedna duża różnica: wygrywający mieli w łańcuszku spółek (spółka matka -> córka -> kolejna spółka) jedną firmę więcej. Być może to było kluczowe?

Najważniejszy mały szczegół na koniec. Nasza druga pełna gra trwała 2 godziny i 11 minut!!! Ale graliśmy w szybkim gronie, bo Kraków jest naprawdę szybki i pod koniec gry nikt już nie szukał miejsca, gdzie by tu zarobić $10 więcej. Takie upiększanie tras niewiele by zmieniło, a jak widzicie mamy dzięki temu rekordowo szybką grę w naprawdę bardzo poważny i zacny tytuł. 1841Lite może być naprawdę szybkie, pomimo skomplikowanych zasad i szkoda tylko, że gra jest tak trudno osiągalna.
