Ever since I started this blog I have been constantly wondering how popular 18xx games are. This is difficult to determine because players are scattered around different places. Many veterans remember mailing lists (and still probably use them), some use Facebook (Train Board Game group), others are using BGG forum, and some are reading our blog. Of course there are more options than I’ve wrote.
A certain measure of popularity can be the amount of sold boxes, but it is known that publishers are reluctant to share such information. We know more or less (unofficially) that the old 1856 print run was 5000 copies, and the last 1846 GMT edition was printed in 1500 copies (based on Clearclaw’s Twitter post). I will share with you the data that I collected in one place from publicly available information. It is the presence of 18xx games on Kickstarter and in the P500 program from GMT (and one thing from Italy).
As you can see, 2 campaigns on Kickstarter have a strong advantage over the others. This is probably due to several factors – very well conducted campaigns with many goals, attractive price and probably the (low) aprice of shipping to the USA had a big impact. At the very end we find 1883, which is probably the result of the fact that both the publisher, title and sales mode (booking through the publisher’s website) was unknown to a wider audience.
In the middle of the stake we will find games by Lonny Orgler – known titles, known author, but on the other hand quite high price (compared to the other titles discussed here), and shipping (expensive) from Europe.

Adam’s store is currently the only one that sells 18xx games in Poland, so looking at the sale of the latest titles you can determine how many groups of 18xx players we have in Poland. Odkąd założyłem tego bloga nieustannie zastanawia mnie, jak gry 18xx są popularne. Jest to o tyle ciężkie do ustalenia, ponieważ gracze są rozsiani po różnych miejscach. Wielu weteranów pamięta listy mailingowe (i nadal pewnie z nich korzysta), niektórzy korzystają z FB, a tam z grupy Train Board Game, inni znowu z BGG, a część z naszego bloga.
Pewną miarą popularności na pewno może być poziom sprzedaży, ale wiadomo, że wydawcy niechętnie się takimi informacjami dzielą. Wiemy mniej więcej (nieoficjalnie), że stare wydanie 1856 to 5000 kopii, a ostatnia edycja 1846 z GMT to podobno 1500 sztuk (dane bazują na wpisie clearclaw’a na Twitterze). Ja podzielę się z Wami danymi, które zebrałem w jedno miejsce z informacji dostępnych publicznie. Chodzi tutaj o obecność gier 18xx na Kickstarterze oraz w programie P500 od GMT.
Jak widać, 2 kampanie na Kickstarterze mają mocną przewagę nad pozostałymi. Wynika to zapewne z kilku czynników – bardzo dobrze prowadzone kampanie w wieloma celami, atrakcyjna cena i zapewne duży wpływ miała cena wysyłki do USA. Na samym końcu znajdziemy 1883, co jest zapewne wynikiem tego, że zarówno wydawca, tytuł jak i tryb sprzedaży (rezerwacja poprzez stronę wydawcy) był nieznany szerszemu gronu odbiorców.
W środku stawki znajdziemy gry Lonny’ego Orglera – znane tytuły, znany autor, ale z drugiej strony dosyć wysoka cena (w porównaniu do pozostałych omawianych tutaj tytułów), no i wysyłka z Europy.
Jako smaczek, dzięki uprzejmości Adama Sikorskiego – właściciela polskiego sklepu z planszówkami Planszostrefa.pl pokażemy jak gry 18xx sprzedają się w Polsce. Sklep Adama jest obecnie w zasadzie jedynym, który sprzedaje gry 18xx, więc patrząc na sprzedaż najnowszych tytułów można określić, ile mniej więcej grup graczy mamy w Polsce.
