The Essen Fairs summary Part 2

The Essen Fairs are always a surprise to me. I have been there 3 times so far with 1 year break. Every time I went for a slightly different purpose. The first time as a euro player. At that time I was interested in a large amount of games and I had big shopping plans. The second time I knew what 18xx were, I was a blogger already and the main goal was to buy new 18xx games and to make interviews.

This time it was a bit different again, first of all I wasn’t alone because my Ania went with me! Secondly: there are still several 18xx games on my shelf that I haven’t played yet, so I refrained from shopping (I only bought 18Rhl from Marflow Games and I picked up my copy of 1824 from Kickstarter).

My main goals were: blog materials + establishing contacts with producers. However, to do this, I had to walk the entire fair around, which was not an easy task. For the first time, I couldn’t get through all the halls in one day! So you can imagine what a giant it is! The whole fairs are located in 6 huge exhibition halls! When it seemed to us that we were everywhere, on Saturday and Sunday from time to time we came across such exhibitors that we saw for the first time! It also shows the size of what Essen Fairs is and how easy it is to get lost in a maze of alleys and how difficult it is to find something later. Tip for everyone: if you see something, anything that interests you, write it down immediately (hall number and booth number, or mark this place on the map). Otherwise you are lost and you may not find this place again. This is my experience from previous exhibitions, and this time I wrote down everything carefully (almost).

I achieved my goals in 100%. Despite the fact that I have not made an appointment with anyone, I did three fantastic interviews during the fairs.
Lonny Orgler told us details of how he designs games, and even a few details from his private life.

We asked Ulie from Spielworxx very carefully about the first 18xx he is going to publish. Now I will tell you only that you still have to wait for it, because it will be released at the earliest in 2021.

The last interview was the longest, it lasted 45 minutes! You probably guessed that it was with Wolfram from Marflow Games who likes to talk about the history of railways, so we have a lot of interesting facts for you, but also accurate publishing plans for next years.

We will successively publish all collected materials. A question for you: which of these three interviews would you like to read first?

Some cool things:

  • I am very happy that I was able to meet and talk to so many 18xx players at least for a moment. I regret that I was unable to take pictures with you all.
  • I saw fantastic self-assembly locomotives and machines several times, there were two exhibitors with wooden models and one with metal ones!
  • parking on the park side turned out to be a best deal for us, thus we avoided most of the traffic jams.
  • each of the people I interviewed received our first player marker and each was surprised twice, with a gift (because they did not expect it) and its implementation (because it is the coolest marker I’ve ever seen)!

Other ones:

  • accommodation for the duration of the fairs was organized by a friend who unfortunately the day before departure learned that the person who made the reservation in the hotel no longer works there and the hotel does not have our reservation and they have no free room. So on Monday, we were terribly looking for some free accommodation at a reasonable price. Our quite a large group of 9 people had to divide and we had two separate places, more expensive and further away than previously planned. But for a moment I was afraid that we would sleep in the car čśë
  • if you have already been to the Fairs, you know that Saturday can be crowded. This time it was even tighter and it was even harder to move. That is why on Saturday it is worth planning all the attractions well (interviews, meetings, shopping, playing).

For the next Essen Fairs we have big plans, maybe even our booth would be there? Would you like to visit such a shop with all our 18xx stuff?

Targi w Essen s─ů dla mnie zawsze zaskoczeniem. Dotychczas by┼éem na nich 3 razy, zawsze mia┼éem 1 rok przerwy i za ka┼╝dym razem jecha┼éem w troch─Ö innym celu. Za pierwszym razem, jako gracz euro. Wtedy interesowa┼éa mnie g├│ra gier i mia┼éem wielkie plany zakupowe. Za drugim razem wiedzia┼éem ju┼╝, czym s─ů osiemnastki, prowadzi┼éem bloga i g┼é├│wnym celem by┼é zakup nowych 18xx gier i wywiady z autorami.

Niemniej, aby to zrobi─ç, trzeba by┼éo obej┼Ť─ç ca┼ée targi, co nie by┼éo ┼éatwym zadaniem.

Ostatni wywiad by┼é najd┼éu┼╝szy, trwa┼é 45 minut!
Pytanie do was: kt├│ry z tych trzech wywiad├│w chcieliby┼Ťcie przeczyta─ç jako pierwszy?

Z fajnych rzeczy:

  • bardzo si─Ö ciesz─Ö, ┼╝e uda┼éo mi si─Ö spotka─ç i chocia┼╝ chwil─Ö porozmawia─ç z tyloma graczami osiemnastek. ┼╗a┼éuj─Ö, ┼╝e nie uda┼éo mi si─Ö zrobi─ç z wami wszystkimi zdj─Öcia.
  • kilka razy widzia┼éem fantastyczne makiety r├│┼╝nych lokomotyw i maszyn do samodzielnego z┼éo┼╝enia, by┼éo dw├│ch wystawc├│w z modelami drewnianymi i jeden z metalowymi!
  • parking po stronie parku jeszcze raz okaza┼é si─Ö strza┼éem w 10tk─Ö, unikn─Öli┼Ťmy w ten spos├│b wi─Ökszo┼Ťci kork├│w.
  • ka┼╝da z os├│b, z kt├│r─ů przeprowadza┼éem wywiad, otrzyma┼éa nasz znacznik pierwszego gracza i ka┼╝da by┼éa zaskoczona podw├│jnie, prezentem (bo si─Ö go nie spodziewa┼éa) i jego wykonaniem (bo jest to najfajniejszy znacznik, jaki widzia┼éem) !

Z niefajnych:

  • noclegi na czas targ├│w organizowa┼é kolega, kt├│ry niestety dzie┼ä przed wyjazdem dowiedzia┼é si─Ö, ┼╝e osoba, kt├│ra robi┼éa rezerwacj─Ö w hotelu, ju┼╝ tam nie pracuje i hotel nie ma naszej rezerwacji i ┼╝adnego wolnego pokoju. Wi─Öc w poniedzia┼éek panicznie szukali┼Ťmy jakiego┼Ť wolnego miejsca noclegowego za rozs─ůdn─ů cen─Ö. Nasza do┼Ť─ç spora 9-osobowa grupa musia┼éa si─Ö podzieli─ç i mieli┼Ťmy ostatecznie dwie miejsc├│wki, dro┼╝sze i dalej po┼éo┼╝one ni┼╝ we wcze┼Ťniejszych planach, ale dali┼Ťmy rad─Ö, bo przez chwil─Ö obawia┼éem si─Ö, ┼╝e b─Ödziemy spa─ç w aucie čśë
  • je┼Ťli byli┼Ťcie ju┼╝ na targach, to wiecie, ┼╝e sobota potrafi by─ç t┼éoczna. Tym razem by┼éo jeszcze cia┼Ťniej i jeszcze trudniej by┼éo si─Ö porusza─ç. Dlatego na sobot─Ö warto dobrze zaplanowa─ç sobie wszystkie atrakcje (wywiady, spotkania, zakupy, granie).
