My 18xx craziness

Some of my friends still hope that I’m sick and one day I will come back to euro games. They like to talk about new titles and their amazing mechanics sometimes. They hope that I will be tempted by their description. Is it possible? I decided to show you my 18xx addiction based on my purchases. They perfectly illustrate my interests and what is going on in my head 😉
I have been sitting in the world of board games since 2010, but there is no point in reaching for such prehistoric times. Especially that at the beginning for the first 6 years, euro games reigned on my shelf.

What happened in 2015:
I bought such games:

• The Voyages of Marco Polo

• Ships

• Signorie
• Mombasa
• Roll For The Galaxy
• Pandemic Legacy

100% is euro. Since then I have had 3 games from this list: La Granja, Mombasa, RFTG and Pandemic Legacy. That’s only 36% of the games I bought during 2015 year.

In 2016 it was very similar (in order of purchase):

• Food Chain Magnate
• Concordia
• Poseidon
• 1830 Railways & Robber Barons
• Arkwright
• Martians: A Story of Civilization
• Kohle & Kolonie
• Indonesia
• Terraforming Mars
• North American Railways
• Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan
• Ponzi Scheme
• 1846

Then the first 18xx appeared (1830 and 1846), both of them we played with bigger or smaller enthusiasm. A large part of the titles on this list is still on my shelf: New Story of Civilization, Food Chain Magnate, Arkwright, Martians: A Story of Civilization, Kohle & Kolonie, North American Railways, Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan, and of course both 18xx: 1830 and 1846. In 2016, I bought 14 games and 9 of them are still in the collection!
In general, it was a very good year for me. When it comes to games from 2015, I will get rid of them sooner or later, but 2016 is a bit different. I really like Civilization, Sekigahara, Arkwright or FCM. Sooner or later these games will appear on my table and I will be happy to come back to them.

The next year (2017) brought the first huge changes, There were a lot of PnP games that I prepared to play, but I bought as the new ones :

Now it’s easier for me to list the titles that I don’t have anymore: 18CZ (to be honest, I’m a bit sorry because the game works well for 2 people), Winsome 2017 Set and Antiquity. When I started the adventure with 18xx, I also became interested in war games. That’s why Sekigahara is on the 2016 shopping list, that’s why the Falling Sky is on the shelf. I don’t know if I will ever play Falling Sky, apparently it’s a very good title, but for me, 18xx has absolute priority.

In the 2018 year there was only 18xx boughts:

• 18CLE
• 18GB
• 18PA
• 1841
• 1832
• 1835
• 18BL
• 1856

There are fewer titles, but look what they are and what money I had to spend to buy them! But beware! One thing is very important here. Virtually all of the titles from 2018 are still on the shelf and I’m not going to make any changes. A similar situation applies to 2017. I know that not all my fellow players liked some of them. There are better and worse 18xx games, but my taste is still developing. We are constantly discovering 18xx games and we are learning to play more and more smoothly. The game that now takes us too much time in our opinion, maybe in next 3-4 years will last 1-2 hours shorter? Maybe we will get bored of the titles we play for the hundredth time and once again we will give a chance to some other, which now have a poor score with us.

The year 2019 is so far only such purchases:

So you can see that there is not much room here for new games other than 18xx. Life changes all the time and so do we, we adapt to different situations that shape us, and I do not feel that my 18xx hunger is saturated yet. Now 18xx is my world and I think it is going to stay that way.

Niektórzy moi znajomi ciągle mają nadzieję, że jestem jeszcze uleczalnie chory i pewnego dnia wrócę do gier euro. Lubią oni czasami opowiadać o nowych tytułach i ich zachwycającej mechanice. W świecie planszówkek siedzę od 2010 roku, ale nie ma po co sięgać do tak prehistorycznych czasów. Tym bardziej że na początku przez 6 pierwszych lat, na mojej półce królowały eurasy.

Wtedy pojawiły się pierwsze 18xx (1830 i 1846), obie zagraliśmy z mniejszym lub większym zapałem. Duża część tytułów z tej listy ciągle jest na półce: New Story of Civilization, Food Chain Magnate, Arkwright, Martians: A Story of Civilization, Kohle & Kolonie, North American Railways, Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan, oraz oczywiście obie 18xx czyli: 1830 i 1846. W 2016 roku kupiłem 14 gier i 9 z nich ciagle jest w kolekcji!
Generalnie był to dla mnie bardzo dobry rocznik. Jeśli chodzi o gry z 2015 roku to je po prostu mam na półce i pewnie prędzej czy później się ich pozbędę, ale rocznik 2016 to trochę inna sprawa. Bardzo lubię Cywilizację, Sekigaharę, Arkwrighta czy FCM. Te gry prędzej czy później jeszcze pojawią się na moim stole i z przyjemnością do nich wrócę.

Kolejny rok przyniósł pierwsze olbrzymie zmiany, był to rok 2017. Na to, aby móc przestawić się z euro na 18xx, wydałem pokaźną dla mnie kwotę, zakupiłem wtedy:

Teraz łatwiej jest mi wymienić te tytuły, których już nie mam: 18CZ (tej sprzedaży prawdę mówiąc, trochę mi szkoda, bo gra fajnie działa na 2 osoby), Winsome 2017 Set oraz Antiquity. Antiquity kupiłem pod wpływem chwili, będąc na targach w Essen. Gdy zaczynałem przygodę z 18xx, to równocześnie zacząłem interesować się bitewniakami. Dlatego na liście zakupów z 2016 roku jest Sekigahara, dlatego też mam na półce Falling Sky. Nie wiem, czy w Falling Sky kiedyś zagram, podobno to bardzo dobry tytuł. U mnie 18xx ma bezwzględnie pierwszeństwo.

Rok 2018 już w 100% należy do 18xx:

Tytułów jest mniej, ale popatrzcie jakiego są one kalibru i jaką kasę trzeba było na nie poświęcić! Ale uwaga! Jedna rzecz jest tutaj bardzo istotna. Praktycznie wszystkie tytuły z 2018 roku mam dalej na półce i raczej nie zamierzam robić żadnych zmian z nimi związanych. Podobna sytuacja dotyczy roku 2017. Wiem, że nie wszystkim moim współgraczom spodobały się niektóre z tych osiemnastek. Są przecież lepsze i gorsze gry 18xx, ale mój gust ciągle się kształtuje. 18xx ciągle odkrywamy i uczymy się grać coraz płynniej. Gra która teraz zajmuje nam zbyt dużo czasu w naszym mniemaniu, może za 3-4 lata będzie trwała 1-2 godziny krócej? Może znudzą się nam te tytuły, w które zagramy po raz setny i damy jeszcze raz szansę jakiejś osiemnastce, która teraz ma u nas słabą notę.

Widzicie więc, że nie ma tutaj za bardzo miejsca na nowe inne gry niż 18xx. Życie zmienia się cały czas i my razem z nim, dopasowujemy się do różnych sytuacji, które nas kształtują, a ja nie czuję jeszcze, żeby mój osiemnastkowy głód był nasycony. Teraz 18xx to mój świat i myślę, że tak zostanie.
