Two Kickstarters of 18xx games simultaneously and what will happen next?

This situation has not happened so far and I do not know if it ever will. Not so long ago (2 years ago) to buy at a reasonable price (i.e. I think about 18xx games published in large volume) there were only a few titles, you could count them on the fingers. Then we only had announcements (a lot of announcements), and now two authors collect funds for the release of 18Chesapeake and 1824. These two games have already had a great success and I think that even the authors are surprised by the amounts of buyers that is still growing (because these Kicksterters are still in progress when I’m writing this). The next and next games are waiting in the line. If all plans are implemented with such success in two years, players will have a choice of 10 new 18xx games available in good stores! Such information is fantastic for the players, a bit worse for the publishers, because the competition on the 18xx market is getting bigger – only from the beginning of this year there have been two new publishing houses that will have 18xx on offer. One of them is quite a new Grand Trunk Games, the other one is an experienced company called Spielworxx.
So we have on the one hand such a big number of 18xx titles in large volume, which we have never had before, on the other hand, a huge interest in 18xx games (we also see this on the statistics of viewing our blog).

How was it in the past? We had three Kickstarters with 18xx games, so far (before this year):

As you can see, the difference is significant. Perhaps we are just witnesses of the total change of the 18xx market. So far, a large majority of games in this series were produced by three companies: All-Aboard Games, Golden Spike Games and Marflow Games all using the home methods. This was due to the fact that the small popularity of these titles was associated with their very small expenditure (which also influenced the high price of these games). You can see their full list on this page: http://fwtwr.com/18xx/ludography.htm For some of you, it may come as a surprise that such a large number of games appear every year (although in small volume, but still).

Currently, AAG collects money for the 18Chesapeake release. Scott from AAG revealed that the 18Chesapeake volume is going to be bigger than all the games he sold so far! Marflow is to follow the same step this year. If successive Kickstarters are a success, then maybe the 18xx market will grown to make all subsequent games appear in large volumes? These are just my assumptions, but the minimum number of items that is allowed to issue in large volume is not thousands but it could be only 500 copies! Of course, the printing house that will do it is not Panda Games, but it is a small printing house from Krakow in Poland. But this is possible! The price for issuing one item is of course much higher in this case than if there were 1000 copies or more. The volume is very important here. If the volume is 2 thousand copies, the price of issuing one game decreases by 30% compared to the volume of 1000 pieces! If you are not convinced by those 30%, I will use a specific calculation. If for a volume of 1000 copies, the production price of one game is $19, then with a volume of 2000 copies it is only $14. Of course, this is only the theoretical price that the printing house collects (however, these are the rates of game production in Poland). The costs of game preparation, marketing, campaigning, transport, distribution … do not have to be included in such a price … these costs are enormous and it is already a full-time job of the publisher. Perhaps, however, we are at the moment when the publishers find that it is not profitable to publish games in a small volume, if the game can be released for a wide audience by the same amount of work. The first step is always the most difficult one. This stage is always a mass of unknowns and questions. The second attempt we know what we are doing because we already have contacts and experience. Therefore the first Kickstarters of these publishers are so important for the future of the 18xx market. Then it will be easier.

Two years ago when 18CZ was released, in an interview Lonny stated that the most difficult stage was sending all the games by himself. Now he has been successfully collecting money for 1824 and he has plans to publish a completely new title in the same way next year.
I did the same when I had started the Rails on Boards store and registered the company. I set it up when I was waiting in the queue to the dentist and it took several minutes, it was much more difficult to register the company as an exporter in the customs office, or to establish cooperation with the Polish Post. Similarly with the preparation of the first set of stickers, I had to use the application I did not know and I really need to learn a lot. (All this leads to the fact that fantastic things arise in our lives and I am most happy with comments from our readers and what is ahead of me.)

There is also the other side of the story. The number of announced titles is really big, each subsequent title will probably be more difficult to sell. Those people who have already supported 18Chesapeake and for whom it will be their first 18xx game, will not necessarily be interested in investing in new games before they receive it and will not play it. This game will be an oracle for those, who will decide what their future will look like with 18xx.
There is a good chance that 18xx will attract many new players and maybe at the gaming convention when I mention that I play 18xx games, other players will not open their eyes wide, but they will know what I’m talking about.

W kolejce czekają następne i następne gry. Jeśli wszystkie plany będą realizowane z takim sukcesem to za dwa lata, gracze będą mieli do wyboru 10 nowych gier 18xx dostępnych w dobrych sklepach!

Jeśli nakład wynosi 2 tys. egzemplarzy, to cena wydania jednej sztuki gry spada o 30% w stosunku do nakładu wynoszącego 1 tys. sztuk!

Podobnie miałem, gdy uruchamiałem sklep Rails on Boards i rejestrowałem działalność.

  1. Probably more likely someone will be an 18xx game after playing 18Chesapeake than if they didn’t play it.

That’s certainly the case with 1846. GMT producing that has been a huge driver in getting more people (myself incuded) into 18xx

    1. I hope that will be and there will be more 18xx players when 18Chesapeake will be available.

  2. Also there was 18Lilliput from Lonny last year. Quite a lot of those backers picked up 18CZ at the same time if I read the comments on that project right.

    1. Right, I forgot about this small game, but some people do not want to count it as an 18xx game.
