1817 another very long game

I was expecting that when we play again 1817, the time of the game will drop by 1-2 hours. But this time, we played 13 and a half hours. One and a half hour longer than before! With no rules explanation! It was a really long and sometimes tedious game, especially after midnight. We started at noon and in the evening, around 5pm, it looked like we were heading in the right direction, we all thought we would play another game! At 8pm it was obvious that it would not work (although Michał from Olkusz was still thinking about a quick game 1857). At 11pm, we completely lost hope, we could see that the game is still arround, a few stock rounds left and we will not finish at midnight as planned. On the one hand the game is amazing, on the other hand it is a demanding long one.

Each full cycle: the stock round + 2 operational rounds and two rounds of merges lasted one and a half hour. In such a cycle the stock round dominated. 1817 is amazing in this respect. Many times, when we finished the planned actions and the stock round was about to end, some of us revived it. Then we went to the short sales again, took loans or sold / bought shares. 1817 IS REALLY an ECONOMY CHAMPION, every other game in this respect gets pale, hides deep on the shelf because it knows that with 1817 there is not even a chance to compete. Until now, I thought that 1830 is the stock market game, but it turned out to be untrue. I have only one question, why the hell 1817 must take so long? When I was playing one company and I was waiting for my movement half an hour, I almost fell asleep. Does the game have to last so long each time?

I don’t think so. Now we are still playing without any time limits for the player. Everybody can think as much as he wants, it causes that more is happening in the game and probably if we played with a time limit, half of the things that we did in the stock round, could not happen at all.

The most amazing thing in 1817 is the interaction between players during the stock exchange round. And it is not even buying and selling shares as we know it from 1830. There are the negotiations and attempts so as to measure the intentions of the opponents, what they can think of and whether they want to participate in the implementation of our idea. What’s more: during our last game we have repeatedly tried to influence psychologically the opponents way of playing! Let them or try to convince them to do some things that are the most lucrative for us. And almost always it was about short sales. I do not know how to use it best yet. It seems to me that the worst solution is to take short sales in order to get cash, which I will not have to invest anywhere. Such an investment was very painful every time. In our game, everyone probably took short sales, but only half of these transactions were profitable. The worst effects were brought to Michał from Olkusz and Tolis. At first, it seemed that Tolis would go bankrupt. When he managed to survive, then Michał from Olkusz fought for a long time with interest and took one short sale only to pay off another short sale. At some point in the game, I noticed that one of Tolis’s companies is a good investment opportunity and for every short sale I took, I bought Tolis shares. In this way, Tolis and I had a 60% of shares in the same company!

And the last thing I wanted to mention: the map. A good place once occupied is crucial for the game. The map is incredibly tight, good routes are the most important and always at the end of the game I had a trouble with starting trains at the maximum distance they can travel! Because the number of companies that are in the game is unlimited, in turn there are only a few cities and there will always be a ‘good’ friend who will try to block us.

Our game showed that we think too long about making a decision, silting and extending the game unnecessarily. Some of us because of playing the game too long, do not want to play it again, so we have two options. So either we start playing faster and the next game will last 8 hours, or we will play for the last time and put it away for a few years on the shelf. I know, it will hurt, it’s like buying movie tickets for the next part of Blade Runner and sleep in the toilet, but maybe we just have too little experience and the game has to wait for a more proper moment for it. In any case, I give it full rating with a clear conscience which is 10. 1817 deserved it.

Results: Elemele 12009 / Magole 11399 / Tolis 8980 / Michał from Olkusz 8209

Question to our readers: how much time does the gameplay take for you, did you manage to significantly reduce it after another x games?

Tymczasem graliśmy 13 i pół godziny.
Każdy pełny cykl: runda giełdowa + 2 rundy operacyjne i dwie rundy połączenia, trwały półtorej godziny.

I prawie zawsze chodziło o krótką sprzedaż. Najgorsze efekty przyniosła Michałowi z Olkusza i Tolisowi.

I ostatnia rzecz, o której chciałem wspomnieć: mapa.
