Terra Mystica vs 18xx – small compare before a SilesiaRailCon

I would like to invite you to the nearest SilesiaRailCon from the perspective of the former euro player. Why? Because recently I unknowingly realized that there is a game, my favorite one, whose elements can be compared to those that occur in 18xx. Read about Terra Mystica vs. 18xx

The board
Like in TM, we have a board on which we build. In TM, we try to build several separate cities that are connected to each other by sailing. Meanwhile, in 18xx we are building connections between cities and we are expanding the cities themselves. TM’s board is always the same. Meanwhile, 18xx games are hundreds. Each game has a different board, some 18xx are limited to a small island: Sicily in Italy (1849) or Shikoku in Japan (1889), others cover the whole country or a large part of it: the east coast of the USA (1830), Great Britain (1822), yet another 18xx cover whole continent: 18OE (Europe and Asia). Each map is different and presents new challenges to the player.

Races
In TM everything takes place around the races. Each player at the beginning of the game chooses one race and stays with it until the end of the game. You know that in 18xx it is similar? But instead of races, we have railway companies. The difference is that individual companies have shares, a total of 100%. They are usually divided into 10% of parts. The player who has the most shares in a given company, is its president (controls the race) and performs actions for it. The biggest difference is that in TM we have only one race. Meanwhile, in 18xx we can have many companies, we can have small shares in the companies of opponents and majority shares in several of our own companies. Then we play and make decisions for several companies. It’s as if you could play TM with several races! I will just add to the encouragement that there are various positive relationships between the companies. The goal itself is usually to have at least two companies (races) as soon as possible.

Resources
There are several resources in TM that we need to manage, recalculate, etc. Meanwhile, in 18xx, the resource is only one: money. We pay for everything with cash and we only get cash. In TM, all resources are given to the player. In 18xx, our private money is separate, which are also our victory points and the money of each company is separate. This money can not be mixed up. The money that the company has can only be used for its investment and they are not counted towards our victory points at the end of the game.

The round
During the round in TM, individual players perform one simple action, while in 18xx there are separate rounds (so-called stock rounds) during which we buy and sell shares in companies and separate rounds (operational rounds) to perform actions by companies. The difference is only that the given player performs all activities immediately for the given company. After which the move passes to another company, etc. As in TM, the order of players is very important, so in 18xx the order of the companies in which they will play is sometimes at a premium.
The number of rounds is also different, in TM it is fixed, meanwhile in 18xx the rounds are usually variable amount and the game may be shorter or longer, depending on the players’ experience. As a rule, more experienced players lead a shorter, more dynamic and aggressive game.

Revenues
In TM, every turn we get revenues, similarly in 18xx, each company gets income for its trains operated. The difference is that we decide as the president of a given company what we do with such an income. We can divide it proportionally between all players who have shares in our company (this is called a dividend payment), this money will then be our victory points. We can collect them successively or use them to buy more shares of our or other players or even open another company. If we decided to pay dividends to the players then the price of our shares increases at the same time. It is important because at the end of the game, in addition to the cash we collected, we count the value of individual shares we have to win. Does it get a bit complicated? In fact, it is very simple, in TM only the points of victory count, in 18xx only our private cash and our shares in companies (races) count.
When we count income, we also have a second option, of course not to pay the income, because our company may need this income for its own development. Then the price of our shares decreases. Because investors are dissatisfied because they do not get cash from the company, as in life 馃槈

Start of the game
At the beginning of a TM game, each player gets a certain amount of resources. Similarly, in 18xx, we get cash for which we can choose a company (sometimes it can be immediately two companies) that we want to run. Such a company, after we start it, receives a certain amount of cash to start. The amount of cash that the company receives depends on us, because we have to decide how much will be worth the first shares, usually from 60 to 100 for one share. The more value we choose, the more capital the company will receive.

Expansion of our race
In TM, we are gradually expanding the race, so that every round can receive better income. Similarly in 18xx, we build connections for a given company, build stations and buy trains for it. Here is the coolest difference: the trains are rusting and after a while they drop out of the game. Our companies must successively invest in better and better trains, because each company must have at least one train. This is the condition of every 18xx game. If there is no train and there is no capital to buy it, then the president, that is, the player who competes for the given company, must pay extra money for such a train. Sometimes this requirement can end the game, because if the player pays everything he has and still lacks money, he usually goes bankrupt and the game automatically ends. This situation is similar to games in which we have to feed our employees (Agricola), but in euro games this is an additional element that is usually only a small obstacle to development. Meanwhile, in games 18xx this is the most important part of mechanics, the player is still faced with an investment dilemma, what and how many trains to buy, whether to pay dividends or to withhold income in the company. Or maybe run another company which …. Well, here is another great element 18xx. The companies may trade between themselves with trains. Such trade usually takes place only between companies of the same president, but it gives additional opportunities.

Negative interaction
In TM, it consists in blocking the opponent on the map, or taking actions from the board. And that’s it. In 18xx there are many more of them, except that as in TM, we block each other on the map, this additionally results in a negative interaction on the stock exchange, where we sell and buy shares in companies: ours and other players. Usually, if we sell them, the share price decreases, if they are all sold, the share price increases. The second thing is the change of the president, because if we’re a president, and some other player will have more shares of a given company than us, he will take over such a company and now he starts to manage it. Relax, if we have 50% of shares, nobody will take us away from such a company. But maybe we want to make it happen? Exactly, this possibility comes down to the fact that sometimes, if we inadvertently invest, we can become the president of the company without capital and perhaps without a train. This is the worst option because we are responsible for it with our own assets. Such situations are still, even us experienced players do. In 18xx there is no dice roll, no cards, which tells us that we have just lost our fortune. There is a constant temptation to invest, because if I have cash, I try to invest it somewhere to make it work for me. If I can not buy more shares, I buy the opponent’s shares. Because he will probably pay dividends, because his company has a good train, or because it has good prospects. We evaluate such situations differently and sometimes there are cases that we invest badly, we do not notice something, we misjudge the intentions of the opponent and then the game may quickly end 馃槈

Of course, I did not say everything, just as I did not compare all the elements of TM to 18xx, there are a few additional things that makes 18xx so special. I hope I have encouraged you and you will visit us during Pionek, we will translate and play in 18xx for two days. And we will try to get you to like these games the way we like them 馃檪

Chcia艂bym zaprosi膰 was na najbli偶szy SilesiaRailRon kt贸ry odb臋dzie si臋 na Pionku z perspektywy by艂ego euro gracza. Dlaczego? Bo ostatnio zda艂em sobie nie艣wiadomie spraw臋 偶e jest taka gra, zreszt膮 kiedy艣 moja ulubiona, kt贸rej elementy w du偶ym stopniu mo偶na przyr贸wna膰 do tych, kt贸re wyst臋puj膮 w 18xx. O jaki tytu艂 chodzi? O Terra Mystica.

Plansza
W TM staramy si臋 wybudowa膰 kilka osobnych miast kt贸re s膮 ze sob膮 po艂膮czone poprzez 偶eglarstwo. Tymczasem w 18xx budujemy po艂膮czenia mi臋dzy miastami i rozbudowujemy same miasta. Plansz w TM mieli艣my na pocz膮tku jedn膮 i zawsze by艂o tak samo. Tymczasem gier 18xx s膮 setki. Ka偶da gra ma inn膮 plansz臋, jedne osiemnastki ograniczaj膮 si臋 do ma艂ej wyspy: Sycylia we W艂oszech (1849) czy Shikoku w Japonii (1889), inne obejmuj膮 ca艂y kraj lub spor膮 jego cz臋艣膰: wschodnie wybrze偶e USA (1830), Wielka Brytania (1822), jeszcze inne ca艂y kontynent: 18OE (Europa i Azja). Ka偶da mapa jest inna i stawia nowe wyzwania przed graczem.

Rasy
W TM wszystko rozgrywa si臋 dooko艂a ras. Ka偶dy gracz na pocz膮tku gry wybiera jedn膮 ras臋 i zostaje z ni膮 do ko艅ca gry. Wiecie 偶e w 18xx jest podobnie? Ale zamiast ras mamy sp贸艂ki kolejowe. Najwi臋ksza r贸偶nica to taka 偶e w TM mamy ras臋 tylko jedn膮. Tymczasem w 18xx mo偶emy mie膰 wiele sp贸艂ek, mo偶emy mie膰 ma艂e udzia艂y w sp贸艂kach przeciwnik贸w i wi臋kszo艣ciowe udzia艂y w kilku w艂asnych sp贸艂kach. Wtedy gramy i podejmujemy decyzje za kilka sp贸艂ek. To tak jakby艣cie mogli gra膰 w TM kilkoma rasami! Na zach臋t臋 dodam tylko 偶e pomi臋dzy sp贸艂kami wyst臋puj膮 r贸偶ne pozytywne zale偶no艣ci.

Surowce
W TM jest kilka surowc贸w kt贸rymi musimy zarz膮dza膰, przelicza膰, itd.. Tymczasem w 18xx surowiec jest jeden: pieni膮dz. Za wszystko p艂acimy kas膮 i dostajemy kas臋. W TM wszystkie surowce s膮 danego gracza. W 18xx oddzielne s膮 nasze prywatne pieni膮dze, kt贸re s膮 jednocze艣nie naszymi punktami zwyci臋stwa i osobne s膮 pieni膮dze ka偶dej ze sp贸艂ek.

Z regu艂y bardziej do艣wiadczeni gracze prowadz膮 kr贸tsz膮, bardziej dynamiczn膮 i agresywn膮 gr臋.

Dochody
Mo偶emy go podzieli膰 proporcjonalnie pomi臋dzy wszystkich graczy kt贸rzy maj膮 udzia艂y w naszej sp贸艂ce (nazywa si臋 to wyp艂at膮 dywidendy), pieni膮dze te b臋d膮 wtedy naszymi punktami zwyci臋stwa. Jest on istotny z tego powodu 偶e na koniec gry, poza got贸wk膮 kt贸r膮 zgromadzili艣my, do zwyci臋stwa liczymy warto艣膰 poszczeg贸lnych udzia艂贸w jakie mamy. Robi si臋 troch臋 skomplikowanie?

Podobnie jest w 18xx, dostajemy got贸wk臋 za kt贸r膮 mo偶emy wybra膰 sp贸艂k臋(czasami mog膮 to by膰 od razu 2 sp贸艂ki), kt贸r膮 b臋dziemy chcieli prowadzi膰. Taka sp贸艂ka po tym gdy j膮 uruchomimy, otrzymuje pewn膮 ilo艣膰 got贸wki na start. Ilo艣膰 got贸wki kt贸r膮 otrzymuje firma zale偶y od nas samych, bo musimy zdecydowa膰 ile b臋d膮 warte pierwsze, przewa偶nie s膮 to okre艣lone wide艂ki w granicach od 60 do 100 za jeden udzia艂. Czym wy偶sz膮 warto艣膰 wybierzemy, tym wi臋cej kapita艂u otrzyma sp贸艂ka.

Rozbudowa naszej rasy
Czasami to wymaganie potrafi zako艅czy膰 gr臋, bo je艣li gracz dop艂aci wszystko co mia艂 i dalej mu brakuje pieni臋dzy, to zazwyczaj bankrutuje i gra si臋 automatycznie ko艅czy. A mo偶e uruchomi膰 kolejn膮 firm臋 kt贸ra…. Sp贸艂ki mog膮 mi臋dzy sob膮 handlowa膰 poci膮gami. Taki handel odbywa si臋 przewa偶nie tylko pomi臋dzy sp贸艂kami tego samego prezesa, niemniej daje to dodatkowe mo偶liwo艣ci.

Negatywna interakcja
I tyle. Przewa偶nie je艣li je sprzedajemy to kurs udzia艂贸w spada, je艣li s膮 wszystkie skupione to kurs ro艣nie. Druga sprawa to zmiana prezesa, bo je艣li jeste艣my prezesem, a jaki艣 inny gracz b臋dzie mia艂 wi臋cej udzia艂贸w danej sp贸艂ki od nas, to przejmuje on tak膮 sp贸艂k臋 i teraz on zaczyna ni膮 kierowa膰. Spokojnie, je艣li mamy 50% udzia艂贸w to nikt nam takiej sp贸艂ki nie zabierze. Ale by膰 mo偶e chcemy aby tak by艂o? No w艂a艣nie, taka mo偶liwo艣膰 sprowadza si臋 do tego 偶e czasami, je艣li nieuwa偶nie inwestujemy, to mo偶emy zosta膰 prezesem firmy bez kapita艂u i by膰 mo偶e bez poci膮gu. To najgorsza opcja bo odpowiadamy za ni膮 w艂asnym maj膮tkiem. Takie sytuacje ci膮gle, nawet nam, do艣wiadczonym graczom si臋 zdarzaj膮. W 18xx nie ma rzutu ko艣ci膮, nie ma kart kt贸re ci膮gniemy w ciemno, kt贸re m贸wi膮 nam 偶e w艂a艣nie stracili艣my maj膮tek. Jest za to ci膮g艂a pokusa inwestycji, bo je艣li mam got贸wk臋, to staram si臋 j膮 gdzie艣 zainwestowa膰 aby pracowa艂a. Je艣li nie mog臋 kupi膰 wi臋cej w艂asnych udzia艂贸w, to kupuj臋 udzia艂y przeciwnika.

Mam nadziej臋 偶e was zach臋ci艂em i zajrzycie do nas w czasie Pionka, b臋dziemy przez dwa dni t艂umaczy膰 i gra膰 w 18xx. I postaramy si臋 aby wam te偶 si臋 te gry spodoba艂y tak jak nam si臋 one podobaj膮 馃檪
