1860 for the first time

From some time we have more readers from other countries than from Poland, so I decided to translate new articles into English using a translator with my and my English teacher small edition.

Most often, we have time to play short and medium short titles, and among them, 1860 stood out. The game has such a great opinion that without looking into the instruction, 5 months ago I sat down to Photoshop and I started to create. First, the map was so slowly formed, then all the other elements. I discovered that Excel is suitable for preparing cards. Even company tokens looks good in it. And note …. the whole work from Excel can be saved in pdf format. The creation lasted and lasted, so some elements had several versions. I printed, cut out, watched and discovered that this was not what I was looking for, something was missing. Sum up: there were two designs of certificates and three trains.
But the final effect was probably worth it!
Besides, I blazed the trail and other games will be much easier to do this way.

Immediately after we showed what we got, I got requests for sharing these files. I answered that even if I would like to, I couldn’t. I bought an illustration for the purpose of the trains, only for my own use. Other license options were very expensive.
So I cannot share these elements. Others? I promise I’ll ask the author, it’s his game, my graphics do not change anything. He invented all the mechanics. Anyway, the mechanics is so crazy that when I read the rules of the game a week ago, I wrote to Elemele about my discoveries, how unusual it is to play it.

So far, it seemed to me that there are two main trends that divide the 18xx. For those in which the company is founded after purchasing 50%-60% of  shares and for those in which the company is launched after purchasing the first certificate (the president one). 1860 admittedly fits in with the first stream, but the number of changes cause that all our knowledge about 18xx falls into ruins at the first meeting with 1860.
Simply nothing we’ve learnt from all the previous games is useless here. Perhaps I dare to say that our knowledge so far, hinders the overtake of the possibilities afforded by 1860.

Features of 1860:
You know what the limits in 18xx are, the limit here, the limit there, in 1860 the author says: do what you want, so we have:
– we can sell 100% shares on the stock market !!!!, Yes, you heard it well, you can sell even the president’s certificate!
– you can have 100% shares in the company!
– the end of rescuing companies, if it has no train, then it just drives a virtual one and it puts away the money to buy a cool new locomotive, during this time its shares are slowly falling, and when they fall to zero for some reason, the company can be reopened (but with the property that it had before).
– private companies – they can be sold on the stock exchange or exchanged for shares in relevant public companies
– tracks can be upgraded only if we have access by virtual train to a given place
– one of our trains can pass the blocked station!
– there are many more minor differences.

It all causes that 1860 is an unconventional game, it escapes all the schemes we know and we have to come up with a new plan to play it. It’s as if the author has collected all the bans from other games and he decided to break them. And that worked out great.

Think up an action plan:
The most important element of mechanics is the ability to close and reopen the companies. We can choose some companies as the main one, which we will develop throughout the entire game, while others will be only companies that we will quickly use to raise capital from them to buy good train. It is not so simple, the author stipulated trade in trains between companies and he added a few exceptions. But it only makes more fun, otherwise it would be too easy 😉
Such are my feelings after the first game.
Maybe I’m wrong and I will discover other possibilities later.

What happened in our game?
I will write only a brief caution before playing with us: if you are the president but you do not have 50% of shares. Be careful because you can easily lose it 😉
It happened in our last game where Michał was lost by his greed and instead of concentrating 50% he decided to open another company. I helped Elemele and in this way the president has changed very quickly.
We have discovered a new possibility in games where you can sell shares before the first OR of a given company. The player with the priority card who wants to start a business must be aware of the second player’s opinion. How is it possible? Count how many shares will be distributed if everyone buys 1 certificate 😉
If the other player (the second) has a different lucrative investment, he will probably not sacrifice himself. But if he wants to take revenge for the previous game, it’s just great 😉

I uwaga…. całą pracę można zapisać w PDFie. Tworzenie trwało i trwało, niektóre elementy miały kilka wersji. To spotkało pierwszy projekt certyfikatów i dwa projekty pociągów.

On wymyślił całą mechanikę.

I wyszło mu to znakomicie.

To uważaj, bo go możesz łatwo stracić 😉

  1. Wygląda lepiej niż oryginał ? Fajnie gdyby udało się udostępnić, nawet bez pociągów, bo je można sobie łatwo dorobić, natomiast plansza to inna para kaloszy.
