1822 Medium Regional, 1848: Australia and 1836jr

Last weekend I went to Olkusz for another portion of 18xx gaming, this time in 3-player group. We ended up playing for almost 15 hours (including dead time).

We started with 1822. I had found the official scenarios, so we decided to try a Medium Regional one, which is considered a gem. It suits lower player count, reduces the map (no more Scotland and Western England) and playtime by roughly 1/3. Marcin (magole) won comfortably thanks to his 3 companies in London, which was powerful as always. What I noticed is that the north, even moved to the south, is still poor. As long as it stays above the capital, it will be so, I guess čÖé I had one minor company in London and 40% of one of Marcin’s big firms, so I secured the second place. Micha┼é from Olkusz made use of yellow cases of the stock market, having 100% (off limits) in one of the richest companies, but when he started putting over 1000┬ú in his pocket in every OR, it was already too late.

In this variant the game rushes, differently to the original. Gone is the slow pace of first ORs that I like the most. Moreover, I didn’t have that feel of sandbox and “epicness” anymore. These are the reasons I didn’t particularly like the scenario, for me it felt like yet another medium 18xx game. On the other hand, Marcin and Micha┼é found it better than the regular 1822.

1848: Australia got on the table next. The small board was a relief when compared with, even reduced, 1822. What is particular about this one is Bank of England. Every company can take one loan per turn (several if forced to buy a train). Disadvantage of a loan is that the share price of the company moves 2-3 cases left. If it goes off board, the company is immediately taken over by BoE and president must pay a compensation to the shareholders (first from the company’s treasury, then his own pocket). BoE gets control of all stations.

BoE has 10 shares that can be bought by players. It pays small flat revenue plus a value of any tile it has a station on. It’s similar to SBB from 1844, but done way more neatly. So buying the most of BoE and then “killing” companies (after having put all the stations) to make it stronger can be a valid strategy.

We didn’t finish our first play because it was clear that Marcin was going to win (BoE was powerful and he was its biggest shareholder). We decided to play once again. Of course, this time everybody was buying BoE’s shares, so we didn’t have enough cash to start our companies and only one operated during first two ORs. Because of the money frozen in BoE the game was significantly slower. Too slow.

We all agreed that we would have to play it again to give a valid opinion. For now it’s one of my favourite 18xx games.

Beware of the rulebook ÔÇö several sentences are plainly wrong and you must refer to FAQ. By the way, it’s astonishing that such rigorous games can have so sloppy rulebooks. I bet no one had tried to learn the game by the rules before the publication, which should be an obvious way to test a rulebook.

Play time: 2 hours 51 minutes (second game)

Scores: Marcin (magole) 9724 / Galatolol 9237 / Michał from Olkusz 7922

We ended the meeting with 1836jr. I’m not as big fan of this one as Marcin and Micha┼é are, but it’s clearly a good shorter game. I’m not found of privates that block so many cases.

Play time: 2 hours 49 minutes

Scores: Marcin (magole) 4847 / Michał from Olkusz 4081 / Galatolol 3784

Szybko si─Ö okaza┼éo, ┼╝e w inauguracyjnej partii pozwolili┼Ťmy si─Ö zbyt rozrosn─ů─ç BoE i Marcin, maj─ůcy w nim najwi─Öcej udzia┼é├│w, by na pewno wygra┼é, wi─Öc zdecydowali┼Ťmy si─Ö przerwa─ç rozgrywk─Ö i rozpocz─ů─ç od nowa.

Wszyscy si─Ö zgodzili┼Ťmy, ┼╝e trzeba by zagra─ç raz jeszcze, by zawyrokowa─ç.
