1868 our first Winsome

We played 1868, our first game from the limited edition of Winsome 18xx series. Only 80 copies have been issued (EDIT: there were 80 copies from Essen set and unknown number of copies from US unnumbered set). Is the game worth your time? We get it in a plastic box and it contains only a map and certificates. Everything is printed on paper. Exceptionally modestly, and this game also requires elements from 1830: tracks and trains.

In order to improve its reception among the co-players, I prepared a set of new elements for the game, practically only the board was left from the original. I have corrected everything else, i.e. tokens (the original ones are tiny cubes), certificates and company cards. I even prepared a set of trains and tracks. Especially for this game.

But the game will not be saved by colorful elements 😉

Why? The biggest problem is the map, tracks and trains.

Map: slightly larger than the one in 1830. With a small twist. Well, the first four companies are starting in the same city! From which 4 routes will be developed: 1 very good and 3 poor ones. So you imagine what’s going on. It is very uneven, I like uneven maps, when one company has better perspectives then others. When you must think how to use them. But here it is a slight exaggeration.

Tiles: Many people complain that 1830 has ‘tight’ tiles. Imagine that those tiles that are in 1830 are transported to a larger map! And you give companies the opportunity to build or upgrade two tiles at once. What’s happening? Can you imagine it? First, the yellow ones start missing reall fast, so you are upgrading one track first, to release the yellow tile next, that you can build in the second action. Hence the principle that you can build / modernize two tiles at a time. I suppose that if it was not there, the whole building wpuld quickly stop. But even when you start to modernize, at some point the green tiles will be short of! This is the only 18xx in which we used almost all available tiles! But thanks to that at the end, the game accelerated, because there was nothing to build 😉

Trains: there is something wrong here, because only one company can buy 6-train. No one else! So this company decides what the game will look like! When the 3-train will fall and when Diesel will be available. Such situations happen sometimes. And when they happen, I always wonder how?. For the fact that I am condemned to the decision of another player. And often there is some way out of this situation. Because, for example, there is a company to open. But in 1868? Nothing, Michał was the player who decided what and how, so he dragged the game to the limit and when he collected money for train 6 and Diesel, he started the next phase. And it will always be like that, because that is the number of trains and companies.

And besides, trains are tragically enough. So few trains that cause private companies to close, I was able to buy before most of the players took advantage of them. And some people lost a lot 😉

So we have a mega uneven, tight, short game that draws most of the rules from 1830. It also has 1830, the stock exchange with 3 colors (yellow, orange and brown) from which we only came down to the yellow during our game.

What happened during our game?
A small and tight game does not mean that you can not dig someone into a bankrupt company 😉
But the fact that bankrupt company passed through the hands of all players will be recorded on the pages of the history of our games. It’s like in ameri style game, when someone defeats an opponent with one die against 5! That’s what our round looked like when the president’s certificate circulated between all the players.
It was the end of the game, fragrances and losers scattered over the table. It promised to be a very boring stock market round (all shares were sold out). Just one of my companies lost the last train and had an empty treasury. I had the option to save it because the other my company had two 5 trains. But the stock price of my bankrupt company has recently been on a strong upturn. Then it was 200 and the profit option was very tempting. Michał had the rest of the shares, and the only company that he has just purchased had two fixed trains. So I would only save the profits from my second company and Michał would lose the chance for a quick rebound at the end of the game.
So the president changed, Michael accepted him with such calmness, confidence and even joy that Jacek decided that he would invest in this company! I could not believe it, Jacek bought up shares and had an equal 20% interest. And ZERO chance to save, he had some cash + lots of shares and he would have to save the company from them. So the CEO has changed once again. Now, without joy on his face, it was obvious that it would drown Jacek result.
But this is not the end! Then Maciek came into the game, and said that the bankrupt will be his! That he will save it because he has got so many cash. It was some madness, maybe Winsome games affect players so much? Maybe he wanted me to write about him in a relationship? I do not know? In any case, Maciek had to sell several shares in Michał’s company (which had two fixed trains) to buy a bankrupt company (because he was on the certificate limit). And the president changed for the 4th time this turn!

I have never seen anything like this before, it was like a goal scored in the last 30 seconds. A moment that we will remember forever. 4 CEOs of one company in one SR. I wonder what the employees of this company thought then? 😉

It’s hard for me to say NO to this title after one game. Because one game is not enough to give a negative opinion. 18xx games are so many (over 100), there is a lot to choose from. I will give a neutral rating, I would play it once some time. Now, in the meantime, we need some quick title (max 5 hours) for 5 players. I think over 1857 or 18NL. Any suggestions?

Zagraliśmy w pierwszą grę z kolekcjonerskiej, limitowanej serii Winsome. Zostało wydanych tylko 80 egzemplarzy. Każdy numerowany. Czy warto? Grę dostajemy w plastikowym pudełku, w środku zawiera tylko mapę i certyfikaty. Wszystko drukowane na papierze. Wyjątkowo skromnie, no i gra wymaga do rozgrywki elementów z 1830: torów i pociągów.
Ehhh, aby trochę polepszyć jej odbiór wśród współgraczy, przygotowałem do gry komplet nowych elementów, praktycznie tylko plansza została z oryginału. Wszystko pozostałe poprawiłem, czyli tokeny(te oryginalne to malutkie sześcianiki), certyfikaty i karty spółek. Przygotowałem nawet zestaw pociągów i torów. Specjalnie do tej gry.
Samych zasad gry jednak nie zmienię i gry nie uratują kolorowe elementy.

Czemu?
Możecie sobie to wyobrazić?
Bo np. jeszcze została jakaś firma do otwarcia. A tutaj?

Że on go uratuje bo śpi na kasie. 😉

  1. Hello from Australia.

I’ve been reading your content translated through Google for quite awhile. Despite the language barriers, I still find your posts to be some of the most consistently regular and enjoyable out there for 18xx. I especially enjoy the after play reports, photography and print and play posts.

Please keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks James! We are still trying to put more content written in English. I try to write in English and Marcin who isn’t so confident in English will write in Polish and then translate into English using Google translator. Hope you gonna like it 🙂
