18xx have it, like no other board games, that you can download and print a few (dozen) titles yourself.
On my shelf there are 1889, 1849 (the best 18xx I have ever met), 1836jr and Rolling Stock (yes, it’s also 18xx, but without railroad tracks). Now this is the turn for the next step, namely 18xx in Africa.
I would almost give up this title. First, after watching the graphics, I felt a terrible desire for it. Then I cautiously started to read the manual (it is not easy, the author probably assumes that, we have been playing for over a dozen years in 18xx), and it turned out a few ambiguities. Because 18Africa turns the entire philosophy of the 18xx games, which are famous for the fact that there is no randomness in them. Be warned! If someone doesn’t want to be discouraged, don’t let them read on.
So in 18Africa at the very beginning of the game, we draw random shares in corporations, yes, you read correctly! Each player draws 10 certificates and leaves half of them. In this way, in a given company there may not even be an official president (a player with a 20% certificate), then local managers are responsible for managing the company, not the CEO. I do not know what it will look like in practice. At the beginning it scared me away, then at home I did a trial drawing of shares from another game and it was not too bad. The game has a high rating, it is graphically polished in a nice way, so I figured it’s either now or never.
And there is one more plus, its gameboard! Its size is 70 × 100 cm. I don’t know how I will go about it yet, the plan is that it will be folded into 8 parts. Sooner or later I will show it off. Meanwhile here are a few photos of the fresh print.
18xx mają to do siebie, jak żadne chyba inne gry planszowe, że można samemu ściągnąć i wydrukować sobie kilka(naście) tytułów.
Na mojej półce ładnie się już prezentują 1889, 1849 (najlepsza 18xx jaką poznałem), 1836jr oraz Rolling Stock (tak, to też 18xx tyle, że bez torów kolejowych). Przyszła teraz kolej na kolejną kolej ;), a mianowicie 18xx w Afryce.
Z tej gry prawie, prawie, a bym zrezygnował. Najpierw po oglądnięciu grafik nabrałem na nią strasznej ochoty. Potem przezornie zacząłem czytać instrukcję (łatwa nie jest, autor chyba zakłada że tak jak on, gramy już kilkanaście lat w 18xx), no i wyszło to i owo. Bo 18Africa stawia na głowie całą filozofię osiemnastek, które słyną z tego że nie ma w nich żadnej losowości. Ostrzegam! Jak ktoś nie chce się zniechęcić to niech nie czyta dalej 😉
Więc w 18Africa, uwaga, uwaga! Na samym początku gry losujemy udziały w korporacjach, tak jest, dobrze przeczytaliście 😉 Każdy z graczy ciągnie po 10 certyfikatów, i zostawia sobie z nich połowę. W ten sposób w danej firmie może nawet nie być oficjalnego prezesa (gracza z certyfikatem 20%), za zarządzanie firmą biorą się wtedy kierownicy. Nie wiem jak to będzie w praktyce wyglądało, mnie na początek odstraszyło, potem w domu zrobiłem sobie próbne losowanie udziałów z innej gry i nie wyszło to najgorzej. Gra ma wysoką ocenę, jest ładnie graficznie dopracowana, więc stwierdziłem że albo teraz albo nigdy.
No i jest jeszcze jeden plus, jej plansza, albo PLANSZAaaaaa, ogromna, olbrzymia, w żadnej grze tak dużej planszy jeszcze nie widziałem, zajmuje większość mojego stołu (na szczęście mogę go jeszcze rozłożyć). Jej rozmiar to 70×100 cm. Jeszcze nie wiem, jak się za nią zabiorę, plan jest taki że będzie składana na 8 części. Prędzej czy później się nią pochwalę. A tymczasem kilka zdjęć świeżego jeszcze druku.
Umówmy się że ja jestem już chętny. Przy czym standardowo będę marudzić że wylosowałem najgorzej 😉
No właśnie, marudzić mogą wszyscy, bo to co nam zostało, najlepiej przez jakiś czas trzymać w sekrecie, dopóki tego nie opłacimy, tak jak udziałów w innych 18xx. Już słyszę każdego biadolenie i jęczenie gdy okaże się że to samo zbieramy 😉
